  • Energy Bite 66 – A Recommendation for 2015

Here’s a personal recommendation for you for the coming year.

Several weeks ago, I wrote about a healthy, energizing and alkalizing drink concoction I make and drink daily. This came about six or seven years ago after I read a Book about Apple Cider Vinegar by the late Paul Bragg, one of the pioneers of Health and Fitness in the United States.

I have recently read a number of his other books and have found his advice on Health and Fitness to be extremely valuable. I am not a “shill” for Paul Bragg or the company currently run by his daughter. But I do believe in his philosophy on Health and Fitness. Some of his books have been updated by his daughter.

Now, most of his excellent books are available as Kindle books for the price of $0.99 to $2.99 each at Amazon. If you don’t have a Kindle, you can download a free PC version of Kindle at Amazon.com.

My recommendation for entering the New Year is that you take advantage of the price and buy the Kindle books at Amazon.com and read them at your leisure. You will reap huge personal benefits in Health and Fitness and a huge leap in personal energy if you read the books, and then follow the advice he offers.

These are personal recommendations for which I get no compensation other than satisfaction (the Government makes me say that).

P.S. I found the following passage from one of the books to be particularly interesting considering what I wrote in my December 9th article  concerning what seniors talk about in social settings:

“If we closely examined our adult population ages from 25 to 75, sadly we would find many of them mental and physical health wrecks! If a group of 15 adults are gathered together in a room for a social evening and the conversation turns to health and disease, you can be sure that 99% of these people have some chronic ailment eating away at one or more of their vital organs. It seems that everyone has something wrong with them! They talk of the shots they are taking, the operations they have had or are going to have, the pills they are taking and the misery they are suffering. They calmly admit to each other that they are seeing a therapist, as if it were natural to be in a confused, sad condition!” Bragg, Paul C.; Bragg, Patricia (2011-03-23). The Miracle of Fasting – Proven Throughout History (Kindle Locations 3647-3657). Health Science. Kindle Edition.

    Interesting, huh?

May you have a healthy and prosperous 2015 and beyond.

    Thank you for reading.

  • Energy Bite 65 – Your Gift to Yourself

This post will be short and sweet.

Many of you have been thinking about holidays and gifts and your plans for next year. Think about a gift for yourself of health, fitness and personal energy. It is the best gift you can give, and no one else can give it to you.

You can also give to others, the gift of motivation and encouragement for a healthy, fit and active lifestyle.

We have already been given the gift of life. It is up to us how we treat the mind and body we have been given. For many of us, we have let it wear poorly over time. We don’t get to get a new body. But we can renew and refurbish the body that we have. Our bodies are self-healing machines and can be renewed and refurbished with a little bit of attention. Just like a classic car, our bodies can be rebuilt into almost new condition with the right attention, tools and some work. Then, if we continue to treat it right, we will get more than the mileage it was built for.

And too, just like a classic car, if we continue to take care of our bodies we will exceed the mileage they were originally built for. Our bodies don’t have to become obsolete. Just like the classic automobile, once we “fix it up”, it can run almost like new. Airplanes were built to fly. Cars are built to drive. Bodies are meant to move. There are airplanes and cars that have been around far beyond their original planned obsolescence, because they have been flown or driven and most important, have been given the gift of loving care.  Our bodies deserve the same loving care.

Have a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday, and a healthy, joyous, and prosperous New Year.

    Thank you for reading.

  • Energy Bite 64 – The Inertia Effect

We are approaching a New Year. Many people make ambitious health and fitness plans and get off to a great start. They build momentum and feel like they’re really on a roll. Then the momentum dies off. Why? As usual, the reasons “why not” become more important than the “reasons why”. Inertia sets in and the result is the same as last year: Your fitness program has ground to a halt.

Gyms and Health Clubs know this. They build huge new memberships in December and January. The clubs are full every day during January and through much of February. And then, guess what? Most of the “newbies” start disappearing about half way through February never to be seen again. Of course they retain their membership which is a real boon for most Clubs.

Even with the strongest of purpose, people will simply yield to the comfort of inertia. Why? Because it feels better not to move right now , even though when you do move, you’ll feel better – and you know it. That’s a dysfunctional sentence, but it’s true.

Are people just lazy? Some people look at it that way. I don’t think it’s as simple as that. No will power? That’s part of it. I think that inertia is one of those unpleasant facts of human nature (and physics) that says an object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest. It blocks some people from getting much of anything done in any field. It’s static, not dynamic.

In fact, Inertia is defined as the tendency of matter to remain at rest if at rest, or, if moving, to keep moving in the same direction, unless affected by some outside force; a tendency to remain in a fixed condition without change; or the disinclination to move or act. A few synonyms are apathy, idleness, inactivity, indolence, laziness, lethargy, paralysis, passivity and on and on. Hmm.

So how do you overcome inertia? For some people it is just natural. Some people are truly action oriented, and who’s “best of everything” is done while moving. Others can never seem to get off their duffs to get to the gym, or to another a place where they can exercise, even if it’s at home. For most of us the answer is a huge “unknown”. I sure don’t have the answer. I sometimes pack my gym bag full of good intentions, but never make it to the gym, exercising instead at home, or sometimes not at all.

Do you have an answer? Tell me what it is. Email it to bob@thecomealiveproject.com  with “Inertia” in the subject line.

t’s mid-December now. What are your plans for the coming year? Will you start on a new diet and exercise program? Will you start strong, build that momentum, and stick with it? Or will you fizzle out half way through February and let that sedentary inertia get you? It’s up to you!

    Thanks for reading.

P.S. Look for my upcoming book, Beginning Exercise Manual for Active Adults over 60 to debut by the end of January 2015.
